Speech Therapy

Our Speech-Language Pathologists work with children and adults who suffer from speech/articulation, language, voice, swallowing, or cognitive deficits. A Speech-Language Pathologist holds a Master’s degree or a PhD and has earned the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA). Services offered through CHN’s Speech-Language Pathology department include evaluation as well as customized treatment plans. The Speech-Language Pathologist will work closely with the patient's physician to meet his/her needs.

Our Speech Pathologists provide a variety of professional services aimed at helping people develop effective communication and cognitive skills.

These include:

  • Assisting people who have difficultly swallowing or speaking as a result of illness, surgery, or injury including stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, surgery for cancer of mouth, tongue and throat, and head trauma.
  • Helping people with articulation disorders to learn proper production of speech sounds.
  • Assisting people with voice disorders, such as nodules or ulcers of vocal cords, to improve voice quality.
  • Helping to improve cognitive function including memory, attention/concentration and problem solving, as well as reading comprehension due to visual/perceptual deficits.
  • Evaluating, selecting, and developing augmentative and alternative communication systems (such as computers, communication boards, and sign language) for people with severe speech problems.
  • Helping people who stutter to speak more fluently.
  • Enhancing communication effectiveness…improving every day communication skills.

In order to meet the needs of all the residents of our service area, CHN provides these services to patients at Berlin Memorial Hospital.  In addition, Speech-Language Pathology is also provided to Home Care patients and residents of Juliette Manor.  A physician referral is required for an evaluation and treatment plan.
